Faculty of Agriculture

Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria - Nigeria

    Undergraduate Programme

Introduction

The Department of Crop Protection is one of the six Departments in the Faculty of Agriculture of the Ahmadu Bello University. The Department was established 1978. The Department is currently organized into two sections, namely; Entomology, and Plant Pathology. The Plant Pathology Section has four research and teaching units, namely; Mycopathology, Phytobacteriology, Plant Virology and Plant Nematology. The Department also has an Insect Museum that contains a collection of about 70, 000 species of insects as well as a Diagnostic Laboratory and a Culture Room. Collaborative researches have been executed in the past and are currently being conducted with both national and international organizations and agencies at either individual levels or departmental level. Crop Protection Department is a productive conglomeration of very strong colleges and schools, and it also is a whole greater than the sum of these parts. The focus of this strategic plan is that “greater sum,” rather than the particular subunits or parts that compose it. The plan proposes Department-wide goals and actions that crosscut or transcend the boundaries of units, laboratories, and administration. It suggests that the Department can take even greater advantage of its distributed strengths while also reinforcing those strengths and facilitating the “bottom-up” blossoming of innovation and creativity characteristic of the units and laboratories.
The general strategy proposed here for achieving this aspiration is captured by two words: focus and connectivity.

  • Focus on strong or potentially strong academic programs that are strategically important to the Department and maintain areas of excellence within each of the basic research groupings—Entomology and Pathology (Mycology, Virology, Bacteriology, Nematology).
  • Build greater connectivity among the diverse units and programs around these basic academic areas by developing new integrations, boundary-crossing structures, and productive synergies and also building linkages with associated Departments and Institutes within and outside the University.

  • Admission Requirement:
    • At least 5 credit passes in G.C.E. ‘O’ Level/SSCE which should include English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology (or Agricultural Science) and Physics.
    • JAMB marks should be high enough to meet the cut-off point set for the year in which the applications are being considered.

Candidates for 200 level admissions must have obtained:
Advanced Level pass in G.C.E. (or any approved equivalent examination) in two subjects and credits in the West African School Certificate in, at least, three other subjects. The two or three G.C.E. “A Level” subjects passed or equivalents must be in Chemistry and Biology/Agricultural Science or Chemistry and Botany/Zoology. Holders of the following qualifications from Institutions recognized by the University may also be considered for admission into 200 levels:
  • Ordinary National Diploma (OND) in Agriculture with an over-all Distinction pass.
  • Higher National Diploma (HND) in Agriculture with an over-all credit pass.
  • It should be noted that Diploma holders are also required to fulfill the Faculty’s ‘O’ level/SSC requirements as stated above.
    Graduation Requirement
Candidate must have taken and earned 120 credit units. Download Udergraduate Student Handbook
    General
The Faculty of Agriculture offers a five-year course of study leading to the award of the Honours degree of Bachelor of Agriculture. Within the curriculum a wide range of subjects are studied to provide a broad background of knowledge and skills necessary for Savannah ecological zone of Nigeria. The Faculty operates a Semester Course Credit System. Each session is made of two semesters. The first semester is from October to March and the second semester begins in May and ends in August. The Semester periods facilitate the teaching of Agriculture when crops (rained or Irrigated) are on the field. There is a vacation from June to mid-august after each session for 200 and 300 levels students. The vacation period after 400 level and the whole of the first semester in 500 levels are designed to give students a good foundation in basic sciences as well as a broad exposure to all areas of general Agriculture. As from the second semester of 400 level, the students have an opportunity to concentrate their study in a chosen aspect of Agriculture in any one of the four option programmes offered. The Experimental farms of the Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR), National Animal Production Research Institute (NAPRI) and National Agricultural Research Liasion Services (NAERLS) are used to supplement classroom and laboratory facilities. As much as possible places of Agricultural interest are visited to acquaint students with practical Agriculture.
Candidates for 100 Level admission must have obtained:
Marks high enough in the JUME to meet the cut-off point set for the year in which their applications are being considered. They must have fulfilled the GCE ‘O’level/SSC requirements as stated above.
Holders of the following qualifications from Institution recognized by the University may also be considered for admission into 200 level.
    (i) Ordinary National Diploma (OND) in Agriculture with an over-all Distinction pass.
(ii) Higher National Diploma (HND) in Agriculture with an over-all credit pass. It should be noted that Diploma holders are also required to fulfill the Faculty’s ‘O’ level/SSC requirements as stated above.
